Frage zum Verständnis: Strommesung mit Shunt und µC (Schaltungstechnik)

Hallo,
hab mal ne Frage zum Verständnis:
Ich möchte einen (Gleich)Strom mit nem µC messen. Dazu hab ich nen Shunt und messe mit dem AD-Wandler des µC den Spannungsabfall. Der wird vorher noch etwas verstärkt. Geht auch.
Nun hab ich aber schon viele Schaltungen gesehen -und bilde mir ein das auch mal so gelesen zu haben- wo dieser Shunt in den Massezweig gelegt werden muss. Ist das so und wenn ja warum ??
